Just finished reading and listening to the full assortment on Mixmag, awesome work Martyn. As someone who was born in '96 and grew up in the wake of this era, it was what I always imagined my future would look and sound like. Sadly, the reality doesn't quite match up with the vision -more cyberpunk (the shit kind) than sci-fi - so all I can do is say thanks for giving me a taste of what the future felt like in the past.
Another thing your article really hammered home for me was how remote the world of your youth felt from that of mine.
A lot has been made of the death of subcultures, and while I think Aotearoa (and especially Ōtepoti, where I grew up) has done well to resist this, the scene of cafes, record stores and raves that you described genuinely felt like it was from another planet.
I’m sure you didn’t, and don’t, take that experience for granted, but they truly sound like the good old days - speaking as someone who only ever heard tell of them.

Sometimes I think the problem is our past had more of a future than our present does. Thank you, Nick.
Beautifully put.

I think there was a huge cultural disconnect between generations in the late 2000s. The continuum was broken for real. It's tough to think about.
This is aces. Great article.
Thanks, Chris. Appreciate that.
