Sunday Videos
AP & Kamahumble, Lontalius, FILTH x Boiler Room, A.G IN THE LAB LDN, Sisters With Transistors, Loose Ends.
Happy Sunday (or Saturday, wherever in the world you are). It’s just before 10am down here. Later on today, I’m headed down the hill to the Newtown Street Festival to hang out, eat food, catch-up with friends, and play a few changeover DJ sets between bands on the Radio Active 88.6 FM South Stage. I’m thinking local street soul and swingbeat will be the ticket. How lucky were are here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Before I leave for the day though, I wanted to share a few beats + pieces with you.
MUSIC VIDEOS:
I don’t normally do this, but a couple of nice clips slid across my desk this week and I want to share them with you + add a bit of commentary. Here we go.
AP & Kamahumble - HEKAHORCY
These days, I barely drink, but after playing ‘HEKAHORCY’ through once, all I wanted to do was buy a box of beers, go drink them in a garage, and play this song on repeat for six hours. Preferably with some people who can sing + play guitar and will be able to rearrange it as a group singalong for Sunday bbqs. AP & Kamahumble are respectively based in Auckland and Canterbury. Ostensibly, they’re hip-hop artists, but as this song reveals, they’re a lot more as well. A fever dream of 90s No Limit/Cash Money Records rising out of the South Pacific.
Lontalius - Carousel
Wellington singer-songwriter and producer Lontalius returns with YET ANOTHER sweet, lovesick indie-rock song wrapped up in a gorgeous nocturnal video directed by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Save this one for a quiet moment.
FILTH X BOILER ROOM
If you only watch one Boiler Room session this year, please make it Lady Shaka’s appearance at the recent FILTH x Boiler Room session in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, or as those of you overseas may know it, Auckland, New Zealand. Again, how lucky are we down here to be in the position to be able to hold events like this safely during the pandemic days. It’s hard to explain how emotional I found seeing Lady Shaka play so much iconic music from across the Pacific as part of her set. This one opens portals and I hope to see more of us travelling down them.
I was also going to share BBYFACEKILLA’s Boiler Room DJ video, but for whatever reason, it doesn’t seem to be available to stream off YouTube. They need to get that sorted, cause what she did was - in a word - deadly.
MIXMAG: A.G IN THE LAB LDN
Speaking of great DJ sets, East London legend A.G’s In The LAB LDN session for Mixmag and Coors Light has just dropped, so it would be extremely rude of me to not share it here. A.G is one of these brilliant minds who not only knows her history, but is shaping the future as well. The work is always a joy to witness, and this genre-blurring session is no different. If it’s dope, it’s dope.
LISA ROVNER, SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS (DOCUMENTARY)
SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS is the remarkable untold story of electronic music’s female pioneers, composers who embraced machines and their liberating technologies to utterly transform how we produce and listen to music today. Theremins, synthesizers and feedback machines abound in this glorious ode to the women who helped shape, not just electronic music but the contemporary soundscape as we know it.
As Laurie Anderson narrates, “This is the story of women who hear music in their heads, of radical sounds where there was once silence, of dreams enabled by technology.” I was lucky enough to watch a preview streamer of this recently, and plan to write about it properly soon, but for now, head over to the official website for more details (here).
LOOSE ENDS:
Various Artists, 10 Years of Butter Sessions - Disc One (Butter Sessions)
Butter Sessions, a record label founded in Frankston, Melbourne by producer/DJ duo Sleep D are currently gearing up to celebrate a decade in the business with three new compilation albums, all due for release on the 10th of April. I just want to briefly mention Disc One here, because it features the very talented Ivy Barkakati and Vanessa Worm, two artists we should all be paying a lot more attention to. (Pre-order here)
Suzanne Kraft, About You (Melody As Truth)
Diego Herrera aka Suzanne Kraft, the most musically dependable Los Angeleno based in Amsterdam, is in the process of reloading for June 11th, when he’s dropping a new album called About You. This is his full-circle moment, returning to the hazy, super8 video indie rock and shoegaze of his younger years, and it’s a vibe and a half. You can listen to a few sample tracks above and pre-order (here).
THAT’S ALL FOLKS!!!
