We went to Piha for a few days. Beaches, waterfalls and what might as well be rainforests. It doesn’t get much better.
WHAT I’VE BEEN READING:
043.2: Xper.Xr: Josh Feola speaks with Hong Kong experimental music legend Xper.Xr for Tone Glow. If you’ve got any interest in the history of underground experimental music in Asia's World City (with a particular focus on the late ‘80s and ‘90s) this 5,000-word interview is essential (click here).
Ten Key Performances: Nyege Nyege Festival 2020: Streaming from Cairo, Lisbon, Capetown and beyond, Nyege Nyege took their ambitious 2020 edition online to dazzling results. Nyshka Chandran summarized ten key performances for Resident Advisor (click here).
My Year of Making Lists: For his latest for The New Yorker, Hua Hsu, wrote about 2020 through the frame of making lists. If you’re someone who makes lists, this reflection might make you feel seen. If not, it might help you understand the list makers in your life (click here).
'Big cat' country? New Zealand's obsession with giant feline sightings: Is there a pleasure in not knowing if the decades-old mystery about a cat prowling the country’s South Island is fact or fiction? Writing for The Guardian, the mighty Ashleigh Young investigates (click here)
WHAT I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO:
The sound of rain falling on a corrugated plastic roof.
The gurgle of a river running down a hill (and a waterfall)
The roar of the ocean, the crashing of waves.
The sounds of various native birds singing in the rainforest (not sure if it was really a rainforest, but it might as well have been)
WHAT I’VE GOT COMING UP:
Yesterday, I wrote up a couple of end of year/best of year music lists for some different websites and forums. I’ll include them in Selected Works after they’re published. I also filed the latest installment of my new music column for Dazed & Confused. As always, a nod towards ten emerging musicians from around the globe who I think deserve a bit of extra shine. One other thing, last week I wrote up the release sheet for an amazing UK street soul 12” reissue. More on all of this soon.
