Selected Works is a weekly (usually) newsletter by the Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa (Wellington, New Zealand) based freelance music journalist, broadcaster, copywriter and sometimes DJ Martyn Pepperell, aka Yours Truly. Most weeks, Selected Works consists of a recap of what I’ve been doing lately and some of what I’ve been listening to and reading, paired with film photographs I’ve taken + some bonuses. All of that said, sometimes it takes completely different forms.
ON THE WATER:
It’s late spring/early summer in the Southern Hemisphere right now. As the days grow longer and warmer, and the sea becomes swimmable, I’ve been thinking about recording a bit of a sunbleached yacht rock, Balearic, AOR, modern ambient type of DJ mix. You know, the kinda thing you can throw on after work when you’re having dinner outside or on the way home from the beach. Anyway, today I managed to carve out some time to put it together and record it.
I’ve titled the mix “On The Water”, which should give you some indication of where my headspace is heading at the moment. A bunch of the tracks included are reissued cuts put out by labels within my world, including Music For Memory, Frederiksberg Records, Growing Bin Records, Aloha Got Soul and Smiling C. There are also some contemporary songs from the likes of Cassandra Jenkins, Euglossine, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and SAULT.
If you like to spend some time with my selections, you can do so over on Mixcloud by clicking here.
That’s it from me this week. Loads to do at the moment, and time is short.
FIN.
