Midweek Beats + Pieces vol. 18
Aotearoa Hip-Hop: The Music, The People, The History... Coming Soon.
Hello,
Not a lot to report this week, but things are about to get very busy at this end. In eight days, season one of the documentary podcast project I spent the last two and a half (maybe three?) years working on with DJ Sirvere goes live. Aotearoa Hip-Hop: The Music, The People, The History. Over six episodes, we track the story of the early days of hip-hop in New Zealand, beginning in 1980 with the unsung Wellington Hip-Hop pioneer DJ Tee Pee and ending just as the Aotearoa Hip-Hop/RnB legend Che Fu leaves the funk-rock band Supergroove to go solo in 1996. Right now, it’s all hands on deck with final audio editing, doing media/press runs, and getting all the social assets together. If you’d like to see a bit of that, give us a follow on Instagram over here.
This week’s photographs were shot on Lomochrome Purple 35mm film with an Olympus MJU II, before being developed and scanned by Splendid.
WHAT I’VE BEEN DOING:
To support Aotearoa Hip-Hop: The Music, The People, The History I’m currently writing a set of supplementary articles up for Audio Culture: The Noisy Library of New Zealand Music. The first one will cover off DJ Tee Pee. I’ll link you in next week.
Frederiksberg Records have just digitally reissued ‘Esmerelda / Slide Over (To The Real Slide)’ by the New York-based production duo Brooklyn Bunch. I wrote the accompanying liner notes.
I have a couple of interviews coming up, as in people interviewing me. The first one is in print for Your Weekend, a weekend supplement (duh) which is included with The Press, The Dominion Post, and Waikato Times in New Zealand. It’s running this weekend. I’ll post a photo or something.
The second is with Todd L. Burns for Music Journalism Insider, a newsletter about music journalism. That interview is about my history in music journalism, broadcasting and DJing, but it’s also about the podcast. I’ll get a link together or something.
That’s about all at the moment. I’m going to have to skip the recommendations this week, but here’s a few more photographs to enjoy. As always, if you’d like to buy a print of anything, don’t be shy.
FIN.
